Cosmetic Dentistry
In dentistry, aesthetics is the set of theories that refer to the concept of “beauty”, related to the appearance of a prosthetic restoration obtained through the creation of ideal shapes and colours. Aesthetics is a set of objective and subjective elements, regulated by the principles on which the concepts of beauty and attractiveness are based.
A more academic than clinical distinction between aesthetics and cosmetics in dentistry is that cosmetic dentistry’s sole objective is the improvement of the appearance of one or more dental elements (e.g. teeth whitening), of oral tissues (e.g. gum remodelling) and/or perioral (e.g. lips); for aesthetic dentistry it refers to the study and the realisation of dental restorations that, although made necessary by dental problems like fractures, caries or lack of teeth, restore or improve the aesthetic aspect (e.g. veneers, capsules, etc).
